Top 3 tips for planning a wedding day

Congratulations! The question has finally been popped, and it was responded with a resounding “YES!”. So what happens now? Before you dive into the intricacies of planning for arguably the biggest moment of your life, let’s pause for a moment to ask ourselves, “What exactly are we celebrating?”

The wedding day can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s a means to label their relationship as ‘official’ before the collection of their new flat, or a tradition to honour their loved ones. While there is no right way to celebrate the occasion, certain sentiments may mean more to you than others. To assist you with your planning, try doing a simple activity as such:

Imagine yourself 5 years later, in the living room of your apartment with your partner. You decide to walk down memory lane by looking through your wedding photos and video.

  1. What kind of emotions would you want to feel as you reminisce about your wedding day?

(Eg. Joyful, proud, peaceful, secure, hopeful, assured, encouraged, inspired)

  2. What about the wedding day makes you feel this way?

(Eg. The way your man looks at you, the words of affirmation, the presence of your loved ones, the proclamation of your love)

  3. What makes the wedding day significant and special to you?

(Eg. Saying personal vows, the first look, tea ceremony, worship session, games with the bridal party)

As you discuss these questions with your partner, be open to understanding what marriage means to the other person. Be prepared to make time for creative activities on your wedding day, for the creation of long-lasting memories to achieve your desired vision for your wedding. It may also mean to remove activities that would not add to your desired vision. Be careful to not fill your timeline to the brim, and leave no time for yourselves to immerse and enjoy the moment. As the saying goes - less is truly more.
